Intro To Mysore Ashtanga

Intro To Mysore Ashtanga

Join Bibi Lorenzetti & Julie Madsen for this late morning 3-week Mysore style Ashtanga crash-course to learn a practice that will revolutionize your life, slowly but consistently.

What is Mysore style Ashtanga yoga?

Your ticket to freedom! A practice for all: complete beginners, advanced practitioners and all that rests in between. It requieres consistency, an open mind and a playful disposition :)

Named after the city in South India where Ashtanga Yoga originated, Mysore style Ashtanga, is a method of studying yoga asana tailored to the individual's needs.

Postures are taught one by one in a quiet room through individual instruction from a highly qualified teacher. The practice is taught gradually and according to each person’s needs and abilities.

Practicing in this lineage you enter the flow of an ancient tradition that has been taught in India for centuries.

  • Learn the first 15 poses of the sequence with attention and care from Bibi and Julie

Jivamukti master class

Jivamukti Master Class With Lady Ruth

This asana class with an emphasis on alignment, breathing and slow, mindful transitions will include a small discussion on yoga philosophy, chanting and meditation and is open and welcoming to all levels.

About Ruth

I started practicing yoga at 20 after a serious car accident, to regain physical health, not understanding what I was getting into. I took an immediate interest in it as it felt strangely familiar yet cosmic and unlike anything experienced before. Soon after I went to India to take part in the Sivananda Yoga Teachers Training course and afterwards met Sharon Gannon and David Life. From that first meeting I knew that they would have a momentous impact on my life, and I became a student and later a teacher of Jivamukti Yoga. I have facilitated many of The Teachers Training Courses. I have made many trips to India, my home away from home, to immerse myself in the multi layered culture and origins of yoga. I have been extremely blessed to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and his family, Professor HV Rao, Padma Ananta Swamy, Dr. Gurudath and family, Ma Bhaskarananda, Dr. M. A. Jayashree , Sharon Gannon and David Life. The presence of these teachers in my life, the practices they have given me, and the students who have allowed me to serve as a teacher and shown interest have given me a way of life I am forever grateful for.

I am the author of An Offering of Leaves, Sweeping the Dust, Fell in Her Hands -having to do with yoga philosophy and one fine art photography book I Imagined It Empty.

Shanti Mantras for world Peace with Nina Rao

Shanti Mantras for world peace with Nina Rao

Mid-Week Practice in Newburgh, Newburgh NY

August 6 @ 7pm Newburgh Yoga Shala

Online and In-Person

Let's bring our hearts in community together in practice and sharing. Most of us have chanted the words 'Śanti or Shanti' either in the yoga class or in a kirtan event. Let's take some time to talk a little about the levels where we can experience and offer 'Peace'.

We'll learn and chant one shanti mantra in veda tradition and also sing the well-known 'lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu' mantra together. Once you register, you will receive a pdf with the words that we will be chanting.

In a world where it's hard to know what efforts we can make to ease suffering, coming together in prayer is a good place to be. If you would like to bring with you a note with a deep wish for anyone close to you or for the world, we will offer it at the altar.

I will donate the proceeds of this event to World Central Kitchen

Trauma informed teaching: How to create more inclusive and safer spaces

Trauma informed teaching: How to create more inclusive and safer spaces.

With Masha Schmidt

‘Trauma informed yoga’ is a popular phrase, but what exactly does it mean for us as teachers and students? What types of training and support can we put in place for ourselves to become more informed? As individuals, how can we mitigate systemic cultures of harm?

In this workshop, Masha will offer her experience as a teacher and practitioner to define ‘trauma informed care’, and the ethics of that phrase. Our time together will include:

  • Creating a ‘brave space’ vs a ‘safe space’

  • Boundaries, Consent, and Scope of Practice in Yoga

  • How to cultivate more inclusive spaces and how to repair unintentional harm

This workshop is for anyone that truly wants to create the safest spaces for the most people. Please come with the willingness to explore cultures of harm and the intention to find strength in vulnerability. We will create a brave space together.

The Devatas with Nina Rao

The Devatas with Nina Rao

The Devatas with Nina Rao

Growing up, Nina was surrounded by the visual forms of the divine beings as well as hearing the names of these divine beings. These divine beings are devatas, and there are almost an infinite number in the Indian tradition. We first hear of the devatas in the vedas where every mantra invokes a specific devata by the sacred sound of the Name. The devatas are forms of cosmic forces that make up our environment, our body, our minds – our entire being – our true nature.

Chanting these mantras aligns us with the devatas, generating harmony all around. As time went on, the spiritual texts expanded into the puranas and itihasas, including the great sacred tales of Ramayana, Mahabharata, Devi Bhagavatam, Shiva Puranas and so many more. The visual images and legendary stories come from here and are the fabric of everyday life in India and many parts of south Asia.

Nina will share her journey with some of these devatas alongside her time with her guru as a manifestation of these devatas on this plane.

What is Bhakti Yoga

An intimate evening with Nina Rao

Each of us arrives into this community of seekers in our own individual way. We are on a Path into our own hearts and along the way we want to develop a practice that resonates so that we can stay with it and receive the benefits.

As we go deeper, it is helpful to turn toward the roots of our practices and understand more about the 'yoga of devotion'. Nina is a seeker and chanter and she will share about ‘Bhakti’, a word often heard in yoga circles, and how it defines our practice. We will also sing and chant together. NinaRaoChant.com
